Kashmir - A lost cause?

Kashmir is burning once again.. but this time there's a difference.

Earlier protests in 2010 were against the unquestioned rapes, false encounters and custodial killings of innocents by those who were wielding the power of AFSPA. There was no accountability of the actions perpetrated by people who were ostensibly in Kashmir to maintain peace which made some of the peace-keepers misuse their authority {Read - Human rights violations in Kashmir}. Bullets were fired on protesters killing adults and teenagers alike which intensified the protests further thereby giving the establishment a new reason to further up the ante against the protesters. It was a vicious cycle which took a really long time to control. {Read more here - The Kashmir Conundrum}

This time around though, the protests are NOT against the killing of an innocent bystander but the death of a KNOWN terrorist in an ambush that wasn't even meant for him in the first place! The authorities were as much taken aback by his presence there as he must have been on seeing them. To cut the long story short a young radical terrorist was gunned down by the forces and there is every reason to be proud of their achievement.

However, his killing has been met with unexpected and exaggerated backlash from the Kashmiri community in the form of violent protests. The troops have used non-lethal weapons for most part but still it has ended up grievously injuring many of those who are protesting. Entire valley is in a state of curfew once again and internet as well as cable has been blocked at many places.

So who was this terrorist who as the ex-CM of Kashmir Omar Abdullah, based on his unwise and inflammatory comments, seemed to be so much in awe of? You must have read the name of Burhan Wani by now, the so-called poster boy of terrorism in the valley. What you may not know is that he was not just another boy gone astray but a man full of hatred against India who did not waste any chance of using social media to brain-wash more kids to join the holy jihad against the infidels (Indians). In the process, he found it completely justified to kill innocents because being kafirs their lives did not matter.

Sample some of the tweets shared by this terrorist:

The dead terrorist being hailed as s hero

People in the valley are protesting against the killing of this guy who wants to turn Kashmir into a battlefield not just for the sake of Kashmir but for the sake of Islam and THIS is the reason why the current protests can not and should not be supported. As per the Kashmiris themselves their problem with India is of territorial independence but now that the agenda seems to have been hijacked by the Islamic radicals, there seems absolutely no argument that can be given in support of the protesters and stone-throwers. More so because there's a clear backing of Pakistan to this entire issue which has raised it's ugly head again.

Kashmiris waving Pakistani flag at Burhan Wani's funeral

India is NOT an Islamic or Hindu state nor will it ever turn into one. At its very core it remains a nation of tolerance and true secularism so whether it is Sikhs who want to break a part of it into Khalistan or Kashmiris who want to establish an Islamic Caliphate or even far-right wing Hindus who wish to turn the entire country into the majority religion, none of them should be allowed to succeed.

Kashmiris are living in a dream world if they believe that India would ever let them join Pakistan just by virtue of it being a Muslim majority state. By showing their support to Pakistan openly as during the funeral of the terrorist they are only making their case more difficult. If the call had been for Azadi or Independence like it was in the 2010, they would have still got support from certain quarters but the more they talk about joining Pakistan the more they diminish the possibility of that ever happening!

Our media as usual is also not helping with some of the channels as well as newpapers reporting the terrorist's killing as if a hero had died. It is in the benefit of all those who want to see Kashmir peaceful and prospering that they stay away from rhetoric and not idolize such terror-mongers. With a genuine hope to see my brothers and sisters in Kashmir get a better life I hope this madness is controlled otherwise we would keep seeing the same images from the valley every couple of years and Kashmir shall soon become a lost cause!

Of course it has been a lost cause since long because the demography is utterly against India. We the Hindus foolishly think that we can hold the real estate by patronising their religious aggressions whereas for any people with a sense of survival and self-respect it should have been the other way round --- if people are with you they will get the land automatically.

From a purely strategic point of view, Kashmir is a battle which if abandoned there, will be fought sooner or later all over India.

Yea I agree.. But we don't seem to be winning the battle and neither do the separatists.. Wonder how long it can continue like this?

The only way this battle can be won is by abrogating article 370

Well, it was a chance meeting with a Tibetan restaurant owner (muslim lady) in Doon, that I came to know of Tibetan Muslims who were granted refuge be Sheikh Abdullah; heard that they even got voting rights- just because they were muslims- as against them, Hindu refugees from Pak into JK, dont have voting rights in MLA elex and nor do they property rights (need verification) - I think this apsect hasnt been highlighted enough and if true, is a breach of Comstitutional provisions.

We should Tri-furcate the state into
- Jammu State
- Ladakh Union Territory
- Valley as a Special Autonomous Region, with the administrative machinery managed by a Governor appointed from Delhi. Unspoken convention of having Governors mainly from IPS, even better if from Intelligence/Security establishment.

Secondly we should hve all Kashmir separatist orgs banned. Exile Mirwaiz, Andrabi et al. Purge the polity of Abdullahs and Sayeeds. No govt ever forms coalitions with PDP/NC. They are the soft outer covering that mask and protect the hard inner core of separatists.

Fully agreeing with Shri M N Rao. I may add, that the 'Manusmriti', 'Panchatantra', 'Hitopadesha', in fact all Hindu classics dealing with polity have squarely emphasised the दंड-विधान, दंड-प्रयोग (roughly = maintaining order) as the main responsibility of the state. Everything else come later.

Replacing it with all kind of escapist work - such as , banking, trade, money distributing welfare schemes, 'power'-sharing, i.e. reservation quota businesses, etc. - is the chief bane of independent India's polity. Due to lack of understanding, and imagination, and also the greed for perpetual stay in Parliament/office, the governments, irrespective of the parties, made it their chief goal to attract common people with all kind of tricks, including harmful to nation tricks, to stay in office.

The greatest loss in this schema had been the main job of the state: efficient, no-nonsense and clean governance.

Sometimes, the words are used to sound 'tough' but in practice it is the old wine of showy populism.

This is something someone had to say... in democracy you can't expect to live in with the medieval set of laws written in 6 th century Arabia.if they still want to impose it they should expect the consequence.

Dr. Vineet Aggarwal said...

That doesn't sound too far fetched considering what the state govt has been doing in Bengal all this time!

Dr. Vineet Aggarwal said...

Not rest of India but the leftist pseudoliberals

Dr. Vineet Aggarwal said...

Yes the Jammu and ladakh regions shouldn't have to bear the brunt of the madness in the valley

Dr. Vineet Aggarwal said...

Really sad that even with a change in govt we haven't been able to do anything substantial for Kashmir

Dr. Vineet Aggarwal said...

Wonder if that would ever be possible given the political circumstances

I think Kashmir looks more like Pandemonium where people for the nation that is Political will is missing and its obvious when house itself is set on fire by occupants then blameing outside world looks insignificant. It always happens with burning issues that we all sit and talk from media to politicians but with time it becomes a forgotten story then it becomes a chain reaction of incidents. Kashmir is now at its boiling point and needs serious handling.Calling Kashmir a Switzerland is easy than making one. I have been to whole Jammu kashmir and i find it all military and police from Drass.. leh to Srinagar so when so much of military and so many Terrorist activities then will looks lost and its more of chaos.

Recently read this tweet by actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, "Kashmiri Panditon ka sab kuch chin gaya, phir bhi ve atankwadi nahi baney. Isey hi kehte hain Sanskar."
The history i know about says J&K wanted to remain an independent country. But as soon as India and Pakistan became independent, Pakistan attacked and captured a part of J&K. The then ruler Raja Hari Singh sought help from Nehru and India. So Indian toops were sent there, and they managed to push the infiltrators back a bit till ceasefire was called. And it is that Kashmir and its citizens are a part of India today, though they have special laws unlike the rest of India, and they have an increasing Muslim majority who will fight till death for a "free" Kashmir, knowing full well that it will become a part of Pakistan as soon as the Indian Army leaves its grounds. What is to be done? Awaken the youth there. Accept India and grow with it. Work towards peace and prosperity. Will the media encourage this? News people want battles to add spice to their news items. The ad world wants money. The biggies turn a blind eye to this. In this melee, we wait and watch... praying with the peace-lovers for the storms to pass.

Very true.. I hope at least this govt. has the guts to handle the situation with the courage that's required!

Dr. Vineet Aggarwal said...

Very well said.. The whole problem had begun in the first place due to Pakistani attack in 1948. India will never let Kashmir get into Paki hands.

Sancheet said...

One of the important issue is that the Kashmir is not developed economically to be self reliant . The youths are frustrated with lack of opportunity and political parties try to patronise then driving elections without any dividends . This has led to unemployment and you know what happens when people are idle

Jai Sharma said...

I may be wrong but I guess that the separatists are being funded by Pakis and their Middle East supporters. The separatists will be considerably weakened if the financing channels are choked. The intelligence agencies might be working on this. Let us hope they succeed.

Binoy said...

Absolutely true... Only thing is that the youths should understand what is right and what not.... Killing each other will not suffice needs of either... In fact this will keep on going .. Hope someday people understand that humanity is above religion and race

Dr. Vineet Aggarwal said...

Amen to that!

Dr. Vineet Aggarwal said...

Ahreed but there is lack of employment in many places but we don't see them turning into terrorists.. This is no solution for anything

Dr. Vineet Aggarwal said...

If only the jihadis remembered that!
